Mercedes-Benz unveils the new B-Class. Far from the polarising shape of the previous generation Renault Megane , the latest offering from French automotive giant is indeed understated and should appeal to a much wider audience than many of its past designs. Given the fuel economy I had for the diesel being average, I think a better buy is the sister Nissan Maxima with the 3. Although reasonably expensive, it was excellent value for money. Lexus UXh is a desirable hybrid crossover.

Just like its French competitor Citroen, Renault has an illustrious history with large executive models that are groundbreaking and in some cases, overtly radical and quirky. The Renault 16 from the s was one of the world's earliest hatchback models. Renault stuck with the hatchback body style for the 16's subsequent successors, which included the 20 and the memorable The latter's successor, the Safrane though, signaled the start of Renault's decline in the large executive sector.

The Safrane was very much unloved as it was shabbily built and the styling was a tad unimaginative. The next Renault large exec after the Safrane was the Vel Satis, which was an absolute disaster - the Vel Satis was beyond the convention in terms of concept and design in order to differentiate itself from the usual German executive saloon models and hence was badly received. After the Vel Satis debacle, everyone thought that Renault will give up trying another stab at a large exec model and instead concentrated its efforts in making MPVs and compact hatchbacks, but at the Moscow Motor Show, the French brand introduced a new large executive saloon model based on the Korean Samsung SM5 in the form of the Latitude.

The Latitude isn't the first Renault model to be developed, based on a Samsung model- it follows the footsteps of the Koleos and the Fluence in being made in Korea by its subsidiary. Renault has decided that it needs a large executive saloon for markets in Eastern Europe, Asia, Africa, the Middle East as well as Mexico and hence the Latitude was born.

This despite the fact that the French don't have a huge appetite for large saloon models, preferring hatchbacks and MPV models instead. The Latitude then, is once again more of a Franco-Korean-Japanese effort rather than a purely Gallic one.

Outwardly, the Latitude looks a tad nondescript to say the least, thanks to a nose that resembles nothing like the Renault current corporate face that we've seen on the facelifted Clio III, the Megane III and the Laguna. Despite the overtly large chrome radiator grille and wraparound headlamps, the Latitude's front-end treatment looks unimaginative and is definitely not one of Renault's best efforts.

The styling along the flanks is a tad more successful especially when you come towards the rear of the car - the flowing C-pillar has a cohesive feel in the way it joins the roof to the boot line. The rear three-quarter view is by far the prettiest view of the Latitude's exterior.

The flowing C-pillar compliments the smart looking wraparound tail lamps while a single, oval-shaped chrome tail pipe lurks underneath the deep-set rear bumper. While the Latitude looks less conservative than the ageing Toyota Camry, its looks lack the bold styling statements its most obvious Korean made rivals like the Kia Optima and Hyundai Sonata possess. The online experience is pretty fuss free.
